Côte de Beaune continues the Côte d'Or south from the hill of Corton to Maranges. It is often introduced as white-wine country because Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet carry such weight. That misses half the map. Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and several northern villages make Pinot Noir, while Corton produces both red grand cru and the white Corton-Charlemagne.
Colour changes from village to village
Around Aloxe-Corton and Beaune, red wine remains central. Pommard is commonly read as firmer and darker, Volnay as more perfumed and fine-boned. South of them, Meursault is led by Chardonnay, followed by Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Saint-Aubin, Santenay and Maranges widen the range at the southern end. Soil, slope and producer keep every shorthand provisional.
Do not stop at Montrachet
Montrachet and its neighbouring grand crus sit between Puligny and Chassagne, but most Côte de Beaune wine comes from less exalted ground. Village names may stand alone or carry a premier cru vineyard. Meursault has celebrated premier crus but no grand cru. Pommard and Volnay also stop at premier cru, a useful reminder that classification and reputation are related but not identical.

Choose a village pair
For white wine, compare Saint-Aubin or a regional Bourgogne Chardonnay with Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. For red, place Volnay beside Pommard from a similar vintage. A producer working in both villages makes the cleanest comparison. The goal is to see how place changes the same grape, not to memorise a ranking.
