Jumilla sits in southeastern Spain, across Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha, where the Castilian plateau meets the Mediterranean east. Its vineyards run from roughly 350 metres to above 800 metres. The region receives around 300mm of rain each year and more than 3,000 hours of sunlight. Monastrell covers about 70% of the vineyard area. Northern vineyards at 800 to 1,000 metres are cooler and more continental. Cool nights help grapes retain freshness through intense heat, and wines from these sites can combine greater ripeness with higher acidity, freshness and salinity. Young reds have deep colour and aromas of black fruit, plum, cherry, strawberry and redcurrant, with structure and lively, ripe tannins. Jumilla makes rich, concentrated reds as well as fresher, more fruit-driven Monastrell. Rosés are mainly made from Monastrell, with some Grenache, while the whites are dense, fruit-aromatic and textured, with balanced acidity. The DOP requires wines to meet origin and quality criteria, and permits white wines made from red grapes.
